About Me

For over 15 years, I’ve dedicated my career to helping young people, communities, and organisations create spaces where difficult conversations can happen, lived experiences are honoured, and transformation becomes possible.

My work has taken me across the globe, from local communities in Australia to international missions in Khartoum, Sudan. I’ve worked across industries and sectors, spanning mental health and suicide intervention, youth justice, countering hate and extremism, and advocating for marginalized communities. Through this, I’ve gained deep insight into the struggles people often face alone, especially when societal taboos or shame prevent them from seeking help.

In 2017, I founded Taboo Talk, a platform to bring people together for honest, nuanced conversations about polarizing issues. My approach focuses on creating ‘brave’ spaces where individuals with opposing perspectives can connect, build empathy, and challenge their assumptions. These conversations highlight the resilience and capacity for growth we all have, even in discomfort. In an increasingly polarised world, these conversations are necessary for our connection, and really, for our survival.

In 2020, just as the world was grappling with the onset of COVID-19, I joined the United Nations to lead a global Youth Engagement and Empowerment Program. The Youth peer-led workshops revealed nuanced, deeply personal perspectives on violent extremism and community challenges—perspectives that adults, governments, or external consultants would never have accessed. Inspired by the success of this model, I authored a peer-to-peer engagement framework that was adopted by the United Nations and scaled globally, reaching over 50 countries in just two years. This program remains one of my proudest achievements, exemplifying the power of youth leadership and meaningful engagement.

From local communities in Australia to global initiatives with the United Nations, my work has always been about empowering individuals to see their worth and uncover their potential.

“At 22, I was entrusted with designing and leading a community program from scratch—a program that became award-winning and continues to run nearly a decade later. That leap of faith shaped my career and taught me the power of trust, empowerment, and collaboration. Today, I aim to create opportunities for others to experience that same transformative growth.”

Mission Statement

Grounded in restorative practices, emotional resilience, and the value of lived experience, our approach equips stakeholders to navigate difficult conversations and complex challenges with clarity and confidence, leading to stronger relationships and measurable impact.

Core Principles

Empowerment Through Trust:

Trust creates the foundation for individuals to feel safe, valued, and understood. This sense of safety enables people to show up authentically, take risks, and step into their potential. By fostering trust, we empower individuals to face difficult conversations with confidence, collaborate effectively, and build stronger, more equitable relationships.

equity and inclusion:

True progress begins when everyone has a seat at the table. By creating spaces where diverse voices are not only heard but valued, we challenge systemic barriers and amplify those who are often marginalised. Our commitment to equity and inclusion ensures that every individual feels respected, represented, and empowered to contribute to meaningful change.

Long-term Impact:

True change takes time. Real transformation isn’t achieved through quick fixes but through sustained effort and and continuous growth. By committing to ongoing dialogue and collaboration, we create lasting solutions that empower individuals and communities to thrive. This approach ensures that the impact isn’t temporary—it’s rooted in resilience, adaptability, and a vision for lasting change.

My personal journey

As an Australian Egyptian Muslim woman and mother, my experiences have been shaped by navigating identity, belonging, and authenticity in an increasingly polarised world. I’ve often felt the weight of being seen through multiple lenses-cultural, religious, and gendered- each carrying its own assumptions and pressures.

Growing up wasn’t easy for me. As a teenager I felt estranged from those closest to me, and struggled in silence with self-harm and suicidal thoughts. I hid my struggles, weighed down by cultural taboos that discouraged help seeking. I longed for someone to confide in—a youth worker, a counsellor, anyone who could lighten my load and help me feel understood. Those years were profoundly challenging, but they also shaped much of who I am today.

At 30, I embarked on a solo journey around the world, visiting nearly 30 countries in six months. It wasn’t just about exploring the world—it was about rediscovering myself, my resilience, and the power of genuine cultural immersion, connection and collaboration

In 2018, I moved to Egypt, the birthplace of my parents, after decades of feeling disconnected from my roots. Returning to Egypt was a homecoming I hadn’t anticipated. I found a profound sense of belonging and solace in its vibrant, emotionally expressive culture and for the first time, was able to begin my own healing journey. It was in the beautiful chaos of Cairo that I first discovered somatic therapy and ancient remedial practices that have transformed both my personal journey and professional work.

“I don’t believe in top-down solutions or imposing answers—I believe in facilitating connections and creating spaces where transformation, empathy, and understanding can thrive.”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I help people have difficult conversations. Whether it’s bridging divides, addressing sensitive topics, or navigating ethical dilemmas and moral injuries, my work is about creating a space for open, honest dialogue. Using the TalkingTaboo method, I combine deep listening techniques, restorative practices, emotional regulation, and teaching nervous system awareness to foster understanding and build lasting solutions.

  • Not quite. While HR focuses on workplace-specific policies, compliance, and resolving internal disputes, my role as an external facilitator is different. I create a neutral space where honest and open dialogue can happen without the influence of existing workplace dynamics or potential perceptions of bias.

Having someone external lead these conversations can be especially valuable in situations where trust in internal processes might be strained, or where sensitive topics require an unbiased perspective. My approach supports deeper understanding, stronger relationships, and solutions that feel authentic and inclusive for everyone involved.

  • When we engage in difficult conversations, our bodies can go into a heightened state of stress, making it harder to communicate effectively. The TalkingTaboo method addresses this by helping participants ground themselves—both mentally and physically—so they can engage in dialogue with an open mind. It’s not just about creating cultural safety, but also physical safety, ensuring that people feel regulated and calm enough to listen without perceiving differing opinions as a threat. This approach helps individuals feel more open to new perspectives and more willing to find a path forward, even in the most challenging of conversations.

The TalkingTaboo method is a unique approach for facilitating difficult conversations by combining techniques rooted in both traditional Indigenous practices and modern therapeutic frameworks. These culturally rich practices emphasize open, respectful dialogue and the collective sharing of perspectives. At its core, the method values lived experience—everyone is considered an expert in their own life. This ensures a flatter power dynamic and equitable access to the space.

  • I have 15 years of experience as a social worker, providing individual casework, counseling, and leadership training with young people and organizations. I’ve managed teams through conflict and I’ve worked with a wide range of people and groups, helping them navigate tough situations and build stronger relationships.

  • Mediation typically focuses on resolving a specific conflict or dispute, often with the goal of reaching an agreement or compromise. While my work can help address conflicts, it’s not about finding a quick resolution or sticking to formal mediation processes.

Instead, I focus on creating a space for deeper understanding and connection. Using the TalkingTaboo method, I guide people through processes that build emotional intelligence, regulation, and long-term skills for navigating difficult topics and scenarios. My work goes beyond immediate issues to address underlying dynamics, foster mutual respect, and create lasting cultural or relational shifts.

This approach is particularly useful in situations where conflict isn’t just about one issue but reflects broader tensions or differences, such as structural inequalities or differing values. It’s about transformation, not just resolution.

  • I help individuals and organizations navigate ethical dilemmas and moral injuries by providing a structured process that encourages open dialogue and reflection. These situations often arise when someone feels their personal values or ethical standards have been compromised—whether through workplace policies, systemic pressures, or interpersonal dynamics.

My approach starts with creating a safe and neutral space where participants can share their experiences without fear of judgment. Using the TalkingTaboo method, I integrate restorative practices, emotional regulation techniques, and nervous system awareness to help participants process these challenges on both an emotional and practical level.

Through this work, I aim to foster a deeper understanding of the ethical issues at play, rebuild trust, and support individuals or teams in aligning their actions with their values. This process not only addresses the immediate concern but also helps build resilience and strengthen the organization’s overall culture.

  • I recognise that having these conversations can feel daunting. The TalkingTaboo method creates trust and safety bound by clear rules of engagement, ensuring conversations remain respectful and constructive. Often, the issues that require my support reflect breakdowns already present but unspoken, manifesting as miscommunication, conflict, low morale, or moral injuries. Sometimes we make assumptions about those around us, and engaging in meaningful dialogue requires an open mind and a willingness to challenge those assumptions. By addressing tensions directly, we demystify conflicts, uncover shared understanding, and build clarity. As Brené Brown says, “Clear is kind.” Honest conversations, when facilitated properly, can transform relationships and strengthen workplace dynamics rather than harm them.
